Older Friends With Benefits vs Tinder: Which Works After 50?
The swipe app everyone has heard of, against a site where casual is the starting point and the crowd is older.
Swipe with everyone, or talk with your own age
Tinder, launched in 2012 and owned by Match Group, is the mainstream swipe app, and its press room says almost 60% of its users are aged 18 to 30. Older Friends with Benefits is a UK site where more than three in four members are 45 or over and casual is the whole idea.
Tinder is often the first app people over 50 try, because it's the name they know. Whether it's the right place for a friend with benefits depends on how much swiping you're prepared to do, and how openly you'd like to say what you want.

What Tinder does well
Reach. Tinder says it has passed 630 million downloads and is available in 190 countries, so almost wherever you are, there are people on it. Swiping and chatting don't need a subscription, and its paid tiers add extras for those who want them. It has also raised its safety game: since March 2026 every new user in the UK has had to pass Face Check, a short video selfie, and verified profiles show a Photo Verified badge.
Honesty from the first message
Tinder's community guidelines rule out looking for sex on your public profile. People do use it for casual arrangements, but they tend to hint, and you spend the first few chats working out whether the other person means the same thing as you.
Here there's nothing to decode. A profile that says "looking for a regular friend with benefits, somewhere near Leeds" is exactly what everyone expects to read, and the replies come from people who want the same. For a 55-year-old who's been out of the dating world for a while, that clarity is a relief. Our guide on how to find a friend with benefits over 50 covers the approach in detail.
Where the over-50s are
On an app where most users are under 30, people in their fifties and sixties are a small slice of the pool, however wide you set your filters. On Older Friends with Benefits they're the heart of it: nearly six in ten members are 55 or over and the women are mostly aged 35 to 54. Fewer swipes, more people who are actually your type.
It also works on a laptop as well as a phone, which suits anyone who'd rather read profiles on a bigger screen.
When Tinder suits you better
- You're happy with any kind of connection and enjoy the swiping itself.
- You'd like a partner much younger than you and want the largest pool of under-35s.
- You're travelling and want something that works in almost every country.
If you're over 45 and know you want a no strings arrangement, you'll get there faster here.
Tinder over 50: your questions
