Is Friends With Benefits a Good Idea Over 50?

The honest pros and cons, and what makes the difference.

By Older Friends With Benefits. Updated 15 October 2026.

The short answer

For many people over 50, yes. Friends with benefits is a good idea when you both want the same thing, talk openly and treat each other kindly. It goes wrong when one person quietly hopes for a relationship, when nobody ever discusses the terms, or when it's used to dodge grief or loneliness rather than to enjoy life.

So the question isn't really whether friends with benefits is good or bad. It's whether it's right for you, right now, with this person. The rest of this guide will help you decide.

Is it normal? Is it healthy?

It's normal. Wanting sex and closeness doesn't stop at 50 or 60, and neither does wanting your independence. Plenty of grown-ups decide they'd rather have a regular lover than a new spouse, especially after a divorce, a bereavement or simply a lifetime of looking after other people.

It can be healthy too, for body and mood alike, provided it's honest and you look after your sexual health. That means condoms with any new partner until you've both been tested; our guide to safer sex over 50 explains what's on offer from NHS clinics.

Why it can be wonderful later in life

  • Intimacy without upheaval. You keep your home, your money, your routines and your family arrangements exactly as they are.
  • Honest expectations. Nobody is waiting for a proposal or a move, so nobody is disappointed.
  • Someone to look forward to. A regular meeting gives the week a lift, whether it's a long lunch or a night in.
  • Confidence. Being desired, and enjoying it, is good for anyone at any age.
  • Company without compromise. You share the best parts of your week with someone, then go home to your own bed, your own remote control and your own way of doing things.

For people who have spent decades putting a partner, children or parents first, that balance can feel like a reward. The arrangement asks for honesty and kindness, not sacrifice, and that's a big part of its appeal in your fifties and sixties.

The risks, and how to handle them

One of you falls for the other

It happens. Agree from the start to say so if feelings change, and accept the answer, whatever it is.

It drifts without anyone saying anything

Arrangements fade when nobody checks in. Every so often ask, "Is this still working for you?"

Health is overlooked

Once pregnancy is no longer a worry, it's easy to forget about infections, yet diagnoses among over-65s in England went up between 2024 and 2025. Testing is simple and confidential.

It's a way of avoiding grief

If you're using sex to fill a space left by someone you've lost, it may feel hollow. Give yourself time, and come back to it when it feels like a choice rather than an escape.

Can friends with benefits last, or turn into more?

Some arrangements last for years, quietly and happily, because both people get exactly what they want from them. Others run for a few months and end on good terms. Now and then two people discover they want a relationship after all, and that's a happy ending too.

What rarely works is going in hoping it will become something else. If you know you want a partner, say so and look for one; our SilverSingles comparison explains the difference between the two kinds of site. If you want a lover, read our friends with benefits rules and start from there.

Good idea or not? Your questions

Is friends with benefits healthy?

It can be, when both people are honest about what they want, check in now and then and look after their sexual health.

Can friends with benefits last?

Yes. Some arrangements carry on for years because both people are happy with them. Clear terms and regular check-ins make that more likely.

Do friends with benefits end up together?

Sometimes, but it's not the aim. Go in wanting the arrangement for its own sake, and treat anything more as a bonus rather than the plan.

Is it normal to want friends with benefits at 60?

Completely. More than a third of the members on this site are 65 or over.
